Upgrade instructions for RK2918 RT8 / Upad F4

I was upgrading the RT8 / Upad F4 sample and translated instructions to English.


Make sure you have a fully charged battery when upgrading.

1. Turn off the device.
2. Press and hold the Menu button, while holding the Menu button connect the USB cable to device and PC.
3. Release the Menu button after the PC prompts for drivers.
4. Install the drivers.
5. Open rockdev folder and run mkupdate.bat, wait untill completetion.
6. Start the RKAndroidTool.exe
7. Click "EraseIDB", wait till OK.
8. NOw click "Run" to flash the device.
9. This will take few min, WAIT till you see "INFO: Run OK" in RKAndroidTool status window.
10. Unplugg the USB cable the device will start the upgrade process, WAIT. When finished device will boot to desktop.

From version 110729 a new tool (RKDeviceManage.exe) is used and upgrade steps are different.

1. Turn off the device.
2. Press and hold the Menu button, while holding the Menu button connect the USB cable to device and PC.
3. Release the Menu button after the PC prompts for drivers.
4. Install the drivers.
5. Start the RKDeviceManage.exe
6. Select the update.img file
7. Click Upgrade and wait till it upgrades successfully
8. Unplug the USB cable

Info for 0818 firmware upgrade.

There are two motherboards versions for RT8 / Upad F4, AR6302 and B23.

To see the motherboard version see under Settings > About, see image below.

1.it is upgrading from which firmware version to which? Where is your download link?mediafire pls.
I connect rt8 to my pc with win7 ultimate but my pc dun detect it and install driver well.
2. What to do?
3. Where to to download dungeon defenders,samura 2 and gameloft game to install to rt8? How?
4. Why its internal memory have only 411mb available out of 8g without installing any app?
5. How to change default chinese language on the keyboard to eng?

1. I will upload the firmware file i have here later as my connection is to slow. But this is the default firmware and you should already have same firmware on your device.
2. You should use XP when upgrading and USB drivers are for XP.
3. If these games are free try Market, or Google.com
4. The 8GB flash memory is for file storage, the rest if for OS. Connect to XP and check storage size.
5. If you have the Chinese input keyboard, press the Chinese character (bottom left) to switch to English input. You can also press and hold to change the Android keyboard.

3. Actually,I downloaded Dungeon Defenders FW Delux via market.When entering game,it shows HD Tegra 2 and it's trying to download data file(about 600M),then can't download.I assume it's the chipset issue as mine is not Tegra 2.But I've seen other chipset(qualcom,samsung)even my galaxy s run this game without any issue.I'd love to have it running on my RT8.Can u help ?
Samurai Vengeance 2 have the same issue but I've seen it running on Zenithink E98(Amlogic chipset).Graphic is so cool.
I bought this tab as I want to run both on it.It's my purpose.
4. Mean that OS eats up file 7.5G out of 8G ? 411mb only available for app installing ?
If that's what u mean,it is very dissappointed.I bought 8G but can use only 411mb.That's very unfair.95% is for OS,only 5% free.Why?
When compared with my samsung galaxy s gti 9000 16G,after installing >30 apps+300 songs,it still have 4.46G(internal sd card)free,
1.26(internal phone storage)free which sounds very fair.Why day and night different ?

You have 5.79GB free space.

410MB is for APK installation, 5.79GB for games, use it to download videos, musics, games or any files you want,

Connect device to PC (XP) and check how much storage you have.

Im not sure what the issue is for the games but it ay have something to do with graphic drivers.

Test to install Chainfire3D and see if you can run 3D games using it.

Btw, can you please take a photo of your About settings page, so i can check the kernel and build number. These games should run on your device with latest firmware.

Plugins / API
At the moment, the Plugin API is rather limited, but it does allow for some rather interesting plugins like Tegra2 / PowerVR / ATI texture emulation (see the API docs a post below).
The idea is to further improve Chainfire3D so Plugins can manipulate the entire OpenGL data stream.
Hi Andropos ...according to the above,after installing chainfire3d,which plug-in i should select between Tegra2/PowerVR/ATI ?
3. As u know RT8 uses Vivante GC800,it matches which chipset?pls advise.
4. means i can install apps,song,video,etc for 5.79G ?

Chainfire3D is a OpenGL driver and i have heard it helped some users to run unsuported games on their Amlogic device.
I have not tested this on RK2918 so better read the thread first.

The latets firmware for Upad/RT8 is 110714 and from your screen i see you are running on 110718.
I will upload the new firmware later tonight. As im on a slow connection right now.

But from what i see mine is 110708,not 110718. pls check it out again.
