sha120 - There is an official 4.0.1 update available from the Novo website, but while it gives you Facebook and YouTube, you lose Android Market, so it's not really a good trade-off. Instead, try Novo 7 Basic Android 4.0.1_20111221 - Downloads - Android Tablets Forum - this is the unofficial 4.0.1 posted here (instructions are underneath). Also, it'll give you back Spiderman.

We will try to help you. All the updates and resets will put the tablet back to Chinese. If you have made it back to your language, try to remember where the language settings are in the "settings" menu.
The firmware is listed on the page here. You want the Novo7 Basci Android 4.0.1
This is the way I did mine:
download the zip file
leave it zipped but rename it to update not update.zip
put that on your microSD card(that was the only file I had on my card when I updated)
hold the Vol+ and power at the same time(the little android guy will appear) and release
you might get a ! displayed on the android guy...but it should change to some gears...and it will be installing the update
it should take maybe 15-20 minutes to complete...it will update and then restart....it will be in Chinese though
it should put spiderman and all the other apps that came from ainol though
good luck....i'll check back later and see how you made out

Hi Sha120
The answer is in the firmware. Refer to the link on the right for Basic 4.01, rename to update.zip, apply it, reset the tablet to remove most of the Cinese apps and them there are a couple of ways of getting the apps you want back. I find the easiest is to unpack the update zip and you will then have, amongst others, a folder of the original apps. You can pick and choose which apps you want to install from this folder (including Spiderman). I hope I have helped a little for you but if you need further advice, please post again. Restoring to factory settings not only gives the ICS version but it also makes the tablet a little quicker and smoother. Warning: do not unpack and then repack the firmware zip until you have updated the tablet as it gets a bit fussy if you mess around with the zip file before using it. In case you haven't updated the firmware previously make sure that it is renamed update zip, place it on the sdcard, insert it back in the tablet and turn it on with the right volume button held. Hold this button until you see the ainol text in the boot sequence and then release it and sit back and watch as the little android does it's work. After you are satisfied it is upgraded successfully (a few reboots do not hurt to clear out the cobwebs) and then you can unpack and install the apps after you have done your factory reset.

Thanks everyone for your super quick responses, followed all your instructions drakken and droid7 and I have 4.01 up and running, changed update.zip to update and that worked for me, will follow Waxys advice on unpacking and hopefully will keep this tablet, now that its got some good working apps and system.
Now just need to find a good video streamer, VLC direct pro dont stream to device but streams from device to comuter via wireless so if any suggestions let me know.

Android Market
So can I just install the correct .apk from the beta and apply it over the official release.
I need Android market!
I like the official release as it is all in English and I don't need to delete any apps except for the Android market being missing. Also the BETA I could not get Dolphin to work it has a major rendering issue.
The default browsers do not support my web app which requires a local database. Thanks all, love the forum

Android Market
To get the Market up and running you will need 2 files
1. GoogleServicesFramework.apk
2. Vending.apk
I got these from Tasselhof-RootScript which i downloaded and used it to push the two files to my Novo 7 Basic.
The version i download didn't push GoogleServicesFramework.apk to the device so i edited the batch file and added in below command
adb push GoogleServicesFramework.apk /system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
And i now have a working Market.

I think it would be better for you if you went to ainovo and hit the support heading. As for root, I can't remember what I did but I can remember the script you refer to didn't work for me either but I "think" it was someone else's script.
First is to get the firmware from ainovo.com or join 115.com to get the ainol version. You can download without joining but it is easier to join. Are you using google chrome with google translate installed (this makes it a little easier to understand).
I ended up going back to honeycomb on the Basic as it seemed to work so well.

Thanks for the advice.
Do i need firmware if i just want to root it?
Rooting is my main concern.
There are so many things , i get lost.
Also, i really have trouble navigating the chinese sites.. even with google translator.
Surprising no one has made a link in english yet.

As long as you are happy with your current firmware there is no need to apply new firmware. I am sure if you back track through these posts you will find what you need for rooting. You can also try XDA Developers site and slatedroid site. Failing all else a google search often will lead you to what you need. I would recommend you have at least honeycomb firmware (dated about 17/12/2011 is the best I used).
There is a post here somewhere that directs you to an english site for 4.01 but I always used the Ainol factory firmware from 115.com as it always caused less problems than firmware downloaded from elsewhere (I think it is unzipped, zipped, unzipped, zipped - you get the idea - and this tends to cause problems)
Happy rooting
