New Dual-core from MIPS 10-inch tablet demo at CES
So MIPS has announced a new SoC (the JZ4780) and put it in to a new 10" Android device. Is anyone interested? I originally thought that it would be great since they hit ICS so fast but with the complete lack of support from developers I'm no longer sure it's a good idea. How about you? Any interest in this new SoC and device?
... Ingenic Semiconductor, a leading China-based CPU provider for mobile multimedia applications, today introduced the JZ4780, a new highly integrated MIPS-BasedTM SoC from Ingenic. The affordable dual-core JZ4780 SoC offers high performance, advanced graphics and other new functionality, along with ultra-low power consumption. MIPS and Ingenic will demonstrate the JZ4780 in a new 10" AndroidTM 4.1 'Jelly Bean' tablet during International CES, being held January 8 - 12, 2013.
JZ4780 SoC Highlights:- 1.3GHz+ SoC sets new performance point for power-efficient and affordable devices
- Leverages Ingenic's MIPS-Based XBurstTM processor, with an innovative high-performance and ultra-low power pipelining architecture that consumes approximately 140mW per GHz under full load
- At approximately 30mm2 die size in 40nm, the JZ4780 provides a low-cost solution for consumer electronics products
- Features a video processing unit (VPU) powered by a second XBurst processing engine for advanced 1080p HD video performance
- Highly-integrated SoC includes HDMI, LVDS, audio codec, GPS baseband, and other analog/application blocks and rich interconnect interfaces plus sophisticated PowerVRTM SGX Series5 graphics IP from Imagination Technologies

Despite the lack of app support? I have a Novo 7 Basic and so many things don't work on it it is depressing. Other wise I do like the tablet.

Yes I know that. Most aps works. But some. Ore newer games did not work. We need to see what solution will be providing to get bettersupport. Magic code did very good job , but not all aps did work.
They need to ge a big company sells they tablet. So more developers compile apps for mips.

Redarding I will need t know the price. Lately there are very fast dual core tablets very cheap. So will be complicated to people buy mips cpu tablet if it des not offers big differences.
I'm surprice why they are selling this evolution of cpu and not the aptive cpu. It is supposed to be muche better thant this. At this stage they should be offering quad core cpu. At lease

blazingwolf @ Thanks for the post, sorry for kidnapping the thread but i moved this to front page.
Sure we all have bad memories from MIPS on Android and the lack of support by many popular apps, but after reading the article i think this new chipset JZ4780 can be a winner in some markets, here are few point is why:
affordable dual-core JZ4780 SoC offers high performance, advanced graphics and other new functionality, along with ultra-low power consumption.Ingenic will also demonstrate a version of the tablet that includes embedded LTE functionality from Altair Semiconductor, with Altair's MIPS-Based FourGeeTM chipset.1. Cheap dual-core, hopefully with good performance. (i still prefer my 2GB RAM dual-core OMAP4 device over any quad-core i tested, so dual-core can still offer good performance)Now that the MIPS architecture is completely supported in Android releases from Google, Android devices based on MIPS can take advantage of a broad range of applications, while leveraging the long battery life and great user experience that MIPS can enable
2. ultra-low power consumption, i prefer a cheap device with long battery life then expensive high-end tablet with flat battery.
3. LTE functionality, with wireless 4G connectivity at low price this device will have another advantage over high-end devices with wifi only.
4. "MIPS architecture is completely supported in Android releases from Google", if this is true in future releases the app compatibility will no longer be a big problem.
5. Looking at the LTE map bellow (red is LTE supported counties), i can see that this kind of device would be well adopted in counties like India, Russia and Brazil.
Population
Russia: 143,300,000
India: 1,210,193,422
Brazil: 193,946,886

Time will tell, but as i see it every device have its market.
This may not be for you, but for 1.5 billion ppl in the countries i mentioned in point 5, which looks to be the target from MIPS.Samples Clearance Sale - Tablets and TV sticks

I was an early adopter of MIPS in the Novo Basic- figuring with a company out of California producing it, and stated Google support, that all would be well. My first road bump was no Skype, which I use almost every day for personal and work communications and the constant promises of availability of apps etc, led me to sell what was otherwise a good chipset- power conservation etc. So for me, I would have to see the real world release and use of this new chipset before endorsing or condemning it. So I will keep one eye on it!
Currently using Ramos W30 and Ainol Novo 9 Spark (Retina screen)

Well I've left my ainol novo 7 paladin aside to collect dust
.
I guess a dual core processor will speed things a tad bit, my novo 7's stock browser is ridiculously slow, and the phantom touch screen is another reason why I'm not using my paladin (ainol's fault I guess, drives me nuts!! can't surf the web without mis-clicking something) as well as the lack in app support. I've only been using it for document purposes really...
Hope this tablet comes out cheap. I want to be able to open tabletrepublic without the whole system freezing xD.

great, but it's too late: quad core is popular nowadays...
