Hannspad SN10T2 Easy Rooting and Google Apps guide

    Folks,

I had a lovely time with my brandnew Hannspad T2 in Beijing.

In the process I also decided I needed to "root*" this aPad AND to put the Google Apps (Maps, Market, G-Mail ) on.

The guides I found to do this all where rather involved and complex, needing the Android development environment, a USB Driver for the device which you need to hack yourself from the Source provided for the TI OMAP Zoom development board and the Google Development driver (I have done this, it can be done but it's deep geek zone for most), starting a command line based shell on your PC and remote controlling copying stuff on your 'droid, flashing a new ROM's and all that.

COME ON, that stuff is SO '90's... I CAN do all of this, but why should I, these are the depressing teens!

    * - rooting comes from "root", the name for the "God level" user in Unix systems that I worked with in the 80's and 90's...

Normally the Users ( luser in Unix - pronounce the u as oo to get the in-joke... ) of a unix system, such as 'droid, do not have the ability to mess around with the actual system.

Rooting means the user of the device has full control - like running as Administrator on a Windows machine.

It is necessary to be able to do certain things to have this access, but it also means you can cause a lot of damage.

So be a little cautious when running under "root" level access and working on the machine. It is easier than you think to "brick" (as in "turn into") your device and you may at the very least have a rum old time un-bricking (I have yet to permanetly "brick" anything) or a very expensive paperweight (at least the Hannspad is heavy enough for that).

I have found a MUCH easier way. :-P

Gr33z and Th4nX to da cr3w at Sl4t3dr01d & xda-d3v3l0p3rs for the info to help me.

If you can use Windows Explorer for file management, you can root and market enable your Hannspad in a jiffy. IN PRINCIPLE this should work also for other 'droid tabs running 2.X, however, I have not tested this and so cannot say it will.

    What do you need?

    1) Un-rooted Hannspad T2

    2) The Z4root application downloaded to your SD-Card

    3) The file with the Google Applications (Archive) downloaded to your SD-Card

    4) A working wifi connection

    5) 20 Minutes or so. Earl Grey Tea, Butter, a 'scone.

As first step, your Hannspad has ES File Explorer included, however you need to update it to the latest version, you can use the generally useless "App Centre" that comes on with the Hannspad to do the update.

As second step go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications and enable the checkbox next to Unknown Sources.

    Start ES File Explorer.

As third step find and click on z4root on yout SD Card and install it.

Open z4root and apply either permanent or temporary "root", it is pretty darn self explanatory.

Z4root takes a LONG TIME to root around your device and do it's magic. Give it time.

Go make a tea and butter a 'scone, munch the 'scone and drink the tea. Make another round if you are quick drinker and muncher.

After the Hannspad is rooted, according to Z4root, power it off completely, restart, just to be sure. Start Z4root again (from the Apps list) and check the Hannspad is still rooted. If not, do it again.

As fourth step start again ES File Explorer.

Press Menu -> Settings and scroll through the list to the end, under Root Settings.

Enable Root Explorer, agree with all the draconian warning screens.

Enable Mount File System, warning, this has just pulled the "safety" of the big gun, BE VERY CAREFUL NOW.

If you screw up, don't come crying to me:

"Sir Shagsalot, I did not follow your notes and bricked my Hannspad"

(Unless that is you are under 25, female and very sexy, as well as having a high sexdrive!!!)

ALSO, DO NOT FORGET TO UNSET this setting later, when finished! SERIOUS!

As fifth step, return to the ES File Explorer Main Screen.

Find the Googleapps Archive, open it (ES File Browser can unzip it). Extract the contents to a folder.

Copy each of the four folders with the long press -> copy you will see them in the clipboard at the bottom of the screen.

Now use the Folder-Up Icon on the tool bar to get to the device root. If you are there, you see a folder called system. Click onto the folder called system. Inside you see all the folders you copied and more. Pull up the Clipboard, long-press on the app and select paste all. Okay the warning about overwriting folders and files.

Press Menu -> Settings and scroll through the list to the end, under Root Settings.

    Disable Root Explorer.

    Disable Mount File System.

Make sure you still have Wifi and a good connection.

As sixth step power the Hannspad off completely, restart, just to be sure.

You will now see the settings wizard that gets you to sign into your google account or create a new one.

Voila, you are go. The market and all other services will work, with one caveat for the Market.

If you do not have a prior Android device linked with your account, you will get the dreaded "There are no android phones associated with this account." error. There are ways around this, the easiest is probably to snag a friends old 'droid phone and use that to establish a link, other more involves options are available.

If anyone knows something easy enough to fix "There are no android phones associated with this account." let me know, otherwise I'll have to snag my girlfriends sisters Singsong Galaxy phone to get this sorted.

Hope this helps those who want an easier fix than to install the SDK, hacking USB Drivers, Flashing rom's (instead of bodyparts) and use ADB Shell

(brrrrr... that stuff reminds me of when I was a Geek, not the one and only fabulous Sir Shagsalot!)...

Wow, we love that geeky Android stuff . I wish i had one HANSS to try out your Easy Rooting.
Now if some developers could give this baby a 2.3 or 3.0 ROM.

PS. i created dedicated forum for Hannspree Hannspad and moved here:

    That is barely "minor-geek"...

Anything with 2.2 should work, at least it is worth trying. Might work on 2.3, or Z4root may be blocked...

Given the hardware, I doubt 3.X is an option. It may go on the Dual Core Tergra T1, actually, it does (GTACOMB?). I tried to get one, no luck.

If Google did their homework, maybe we can get 4.0?

I am not sure what 2.3 brings over 2.2. I'm really not a 'droid expert (I leave that to the Jawa's).

I have just put the 2.3 Keyboard, 2.3 Homescreen and Wallpaper thingey on mine, not played with the wallpaper, like the rest so far.

Now I need to get a heat-transfer made of this Logo to stick on the back of my Hannspad (I hope the irony is appreciated):

If it keeps solid till I'm home I'll do a limited tear-down as well, looks like plastic back comes of the metal frame which holds all else, so we can have a look inside (boring - the Photos with Zinio showing Maxim's November Issue with Claire Coffee in long black sox, black panties and an open shirt are much more interesting).

    Folks,

Following rooting, installing google apps and setting up talk etc with my google account and updating themarket to 3.1.3 with the file posted here the Market gave me the dreaded "There are no android phones associated with this account." error.

I tried all the remedies posted everywhere, no luck.

Yet, coming to my Shagpad down south and firing the pad back up (it had shut down from lack of power on the train, a full 17 Hours after being unplugged) and the market started working for downloads without giving it any Device ID...

So, with a minimum of luck you should be able to get your Hannspad (and other 2.2 Devices) going full on Google Apps, GMail, market and all very quickly. Use Clear Cache and Clear Data in the Market, Clear Data in the google framework and the do a HARD Shutdown...

    All should be okay now.

    Best tablet under $200?

I am thinking about buying one of these soon for my wife. She wants to be able to watch Flash videos, play Flash games, and possibly attach a USB or bluetooth keyboard and create and edit word documents using OfficeSuite 5. Would this work for that? I can get one for about $200 total (shipped and all) and was told this was the best tablet this size in that price range. Is that true?

Also, could you create a short video and upload it of you doing various things on the tablet so I can see the responsiveness and and get a general idea of the "look and feel" of the tablet before I buy one? I would really appreciate it.

USB Keyboards do not work in 'droid 2.2 AFAIK. Anyway, the T2 Pad does not support USB OTG.

Bluetooth SHOULD work, but I have to get one yet to confirm, sorry.

Using only the on screen keyboard, it's okay for tweets, skype chat and a short e-mail, but please nothing more serious than that.

I have one of the office suits for 'droid on there (whatever was reviewed highest, forgot the name - okay looked at it, Quickoffice Pro) and it works. But I'd rather carry my laptop if I need this.

200 US seems a little high.

I have checked at Zhongguancun in Beijing (think Beijing's Akihabara) and looked at the various other pads on offer. Anything I feel would come close in terms of build quality/performance/size was a lot more, but the market is very dynamic, tomorrow there may be a 12" capacitive touch tablet with a 2GHz dual core CPU for less money (okay, not tomorrow, maybe next month)...

If you check my Review Thread, at the end there is a link to a Video showing the T2 in action, I can confirm it is realistic...
