HOW-TO remap hardware button in ICS

I wanted to remap the HOME button on Bmorn V99 (Allwinner) to BACK function as there is no hardware BACK button.

I tested the ButtonRemapper from XDA but it wont do the trick.

I did some research and found a way to remap the hardware keys and i will share it here.

These instructions are for Bmorn V99 running 4.0.1 but same method cold be applied to any ICS device, you just need to find the right files to edit.

    Short version:

    1. Fire up adb
    2. Edit the key mapping file /system/usr/keylayout/sun4i-keyboard.kl
on second line change HOME to BACK

Long version (coming tomorrow, its 2AM)

One note before mucking about in your key mapping file, make sure you have everything you need backed up. Alternatively you can always reflash as well, but in that case make sure you have are able to reflash. A good point to add is regardless of how you wish to restore yourself it is always a good idea to keep the original version of your sun4i-keyboard.kl file (maybe make a copy and rename it to sun4i-keyboard.kl.BAK)

I'm unsure why Button Remapper wasn't able to work for him as it's basically doing the same thing as he's doing by hand (editting the key mapping file). It maybe because he doesn't have SuperUser and the root settings correct yet? I have tried this on my Onda Vi30W and it seems to work fine.

Yes, i was not able to use the app to remap cos of the permissions. SuperUser and other rooting apps didnt work as well. So editing via adb was the only way it worked for me.

Thanks for pointing out the backup which should be a standard practice when hacking your device.

    Lightbulb

I have remapped my T05A tablet's buttons with this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d.allwinnermod

    From Google Play description:
Change what the physical buttons do, for example you can change the BACK button to VOLUME DOWN, start APP SWITCHER or to start the CAMERA application
    Good luck!

Thanks for the link, looks like a handy little app for Allwinner A10 devices.

Im on a RK3066 device now so i have to go back to the adb method to get buttons remapped.
